HSCN Nursing In the Spotlight

After graduating in December of 2012, Alex Smith left his busy city-life in Honolulu to pursue a nursing career on the quiet island of Molokai. When describing Molokai General Hospital, Smith writes “Most staff members can name every employee, due to MGH’s small size. I believe it to be a very friendly and trusting work environment.”

Smith recommends nurses get a rural healthcare experience for many reasons including “to stand out as a nurse because people will remember you in the community.” Always physically active and with a great love for the outdoors, Alex Smith is a perfect fit for the nursing community on the island of Molokai. As he puts it, “I would be honored to continue serving in Molokai; and perhaps, continue my education and serve any rural population as a nurse practitioner in the future.”
