Hawai`i State Center for Nursing routinely has new vacancies on our advisory board. This page provides detailed information about the nomination process to become a board member.
Advisory Board Groups
Advisory board members are appointed to one of two groups. They cannot change their group within the appointment period. Advisory board positions are tracked by terms (appointment periods) as well as group type. You may contact HSCN (HSCFN@hawaii.edu) for which board positions, by group, have upcoming vacancies.

Nomination Process
This is a two-part process that first includes a nomination from the Governor and then a confirmation from the Senate. In order to be nominated by the Governor, the nominee must submit an application through the Governor’s Boards and Commissions website.
Step One
Step One:
To apply to be nominated by the Governor (best time is before February of each calendar year):
- Prepare materials
- Draft a letter of interest (i.e. cover letter) and your updated resume/CV.
- Identify references you will use (bosses, colleagues, public members who know you personally or professionally, people who may attest to your knowledge on the subject matter, etc).
- Go to https://forms.ehawaii.gov/pages/board-survey/
- Select “University of Hawai`i” at the bottom of the list
- Click on “NURSING Advisory Board, Center for”
- Click on “Submit.”
- Fill in the information.
- Fill out personal information.
- Supply reference contact information.
- Attach a letter of interest and resume.
- Click on “Continue” and complete additional steps as directed.
Submit letters of recommendation to the Governor:
- Ask for at least 3 letters of recommendation. They may provide you with the letter (PDF)
- You may submit letters of recommendation on behalf of the references: https://boards.hawaii.gov/apply/letter-of-recommendation/
- You may also ask your reference folks to submit, but it’s often faster for you to do it
Step Two
If you get a nomination from the Governor, you must then submit information to the Senate Chair who oversees that board AND have references re-submit support via testimony.
- The Senator who oversees will contact you with a hearing notice and often they will interview you before a hearing.
- You will be provided a GM number (Governor’s Message). Please ask people you identified in your initial reference search to submit testimony. 1-2 is usually fine. You can ask them to write new testimony OR they can update the letter they wrote to the Governor but address it to the Senator who is the chair of the committee. (It doesn’t have to be a huge additional effort!)
- You will have more notice that this meeting is happening so you can give a heads up to your references to edit their addressee lines.
